Athol Fugard's Valley Song by A Mixed Company
Valley Song is the first play Fugard has written since apartheid ended in his native South Africa. Set on a present-day, post-apartheid South African tenant farm, a young woman of mixed race yearns to go to Johannesburg and study music and escape the tedium of rural life. Unfortunately, her grandfather wants her to stay and follow in his footsteps, working the land and planting crops as he always has. This classic generation-gap set-up provides the playwright with an opportunity to showcase the talents for characterization and subtle symbolism which have made him famous.
