Dunham’s Bluff, located near Gresham, S.C., across from Snow Island, was an important base camp for General Francis Marion and his men during the Revolutionary War. The Swamp Fox and his troops’ expert knowledge of the swampy woodlands gave them an advantage over the British and helped Americans win the war. They could easily attack their enemy and then take cover in the wetlands.

Archeologist Steve Smith of the Francis Marion Trail Commission discovered important military artifacts on the site, which was purchased by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. Among these artifacts include a British cannonball, a stirrup, and a brass candlestick.   Below are pictures, taken by Steve Smith, of the cannonball and the brass candlestick.
