Godzilla (Gojira). Ishiro Honda. Japan. 1954: 96 mins.
The original, 1954 classic (subtitled) won the Japanese Movie Association's Best Special Effects film and was nominated for its Best Picture.  A potent beast, Godzilla spawned 27 Japanese films and Gareth Edwards' 2014 Godzilla, the first in a planned trilogy.  Gojira explores the effects of nuclear war on nature, the Japanese culture, and its people.  The lecture situates the film in its Japanese context.

Selma covers a key period in the Civil rights Movement, from Dr. King’s acceptance of the Nobel Prize on 14 October 1964 to the successful march up the steps of the Montgomery State Capitol five months later.  Between these points are the marches on Selma, including Bloody Sunday.  David Oyelowo, Carmen Ejogo, Tom Wilkinson, Tim Roth, Oprah, Common.
