September 22, 2015 Godzilla (Gojira). Ishiro Honda. Japan. 1954: 96 mins. The original, 1954 classic (subtitled) won the Japanese Movie Association's Best Special Effects film and was nominated for its Best Picture. A potent beast, Godzilla spawned 27 Japanese films and Gareth Edwards' 2014 Godzilla, the first in a planned trilogy. Gojira explores the effects of nuclear war on nature, the Japanese culture, and its people. The lecture situates the film in its Japanese context.
