While most hewn-timber cabins built by early settlers were crudely constructed of rough-hewn timbers, the cabins on the Francis Marion University campus have timbers smoothly hewn to a uniform dimension. To insure the best possible fit of the timbers, the builders constructed each timber to fit exactly to the next timber. Note I have enhanced this photo so people can see clearly the tiny vertical lines they scratched on the timbers to tell which timbers were crafted to fit together. (Photo 1997)
