Amanita Verna II
Amanita Verna II, 2000

Born in West Palm Beach, Florida, Gately received his MFA degree from Florida State University. His work is represented in the collections of the Gibbes Arts Gallery, Charleston, South Carolina; The Columbia Museum of Art, Columbia, South Carolina; the Fine Arts Museum of the South, Mobile, Alabama; the State Art Collection of South Carolina; and various other public and private collections in ten states.

Speaking of his recent work: "These abstract paintings are meant to convey a physically expressive, tactile surface through brush and knife textures.  They are meant at the same time to convey something less literal; the feeling of a luminous, spacious environment achieved through color.  Although this space is imaginary and no recognizable features were intended, the spontaneous brush strokes and hues could refer to landscape; yellow could allude to sunlight, for example, and blue areas could be perceived as sky or sea.  But it is primarily through the relationship of their formal properties that I hope these works succeed as balanced compositions in the modern tradition."
