Program
Victory Fanfare
Philip Sparke
This extended fanfare was commissioned
by the
Michigan-base professional Brass Band of Battle Creek.
First Suite in Eb
Gustav Holst
For
Military Band
Op. 28 No. 1
1.
Chaconne
2. Intermezzo
3. March
Written in 1909, this is one of the
earliest
substantial original compositions written for wind band. The
three contrasting movements revolve around Holst’s
characteristic
folk-like melodies.
Heroic Marches
G. P. Telemann
Arranged
by Craig Alberty
Kelly Jokisch, piccolo trumpet
1. Majesty
2. Grace
3. Valiance
Music of the Baroque is a staple of the trumpet repertoire, but
not often performed by bands. These three movements from a
set
of twelve were written in 1728. Telemann wrote them while he
was
in Hamburg but chose to apply French standards and styles to the pieces.
The March from “1941”
John Williams
Arranged
by Paul Lavender
This delightful march from the Steven
Spielberg movie
features tuneful strains and rousing brass writing presented in a
skillfully conceived form. It is an example of Williams’
writing from
when he was just emerging as a renowned movie composer.
Morceau
Symphonique
Alexandre Guilmant
Arranged
by Wesley Shepard
Henry Isgett, trombone
Morceau Symphonique has long been a
favorite of
trombone soloists as it presents the instrument in a variety of
stylistic settings. Guilmant (1837-1911) was one of the
finest
organists of his time.
The Light
Eternal
James Swearingen
On February 3, 1943, The S.S. Dorchester, an American troop transport
vessel, sank in the icy waters off the coast of Greenland, the victim
of a German U-boat. Of the 904 men aboard, 605 were lost.
Among
those who perished were four army chaplains, each
of a
different faith, each called to the same duty.
The testimony of the survivors tells the story best; “As
overcrowded
lifeboats capsized, as rafts drifed away empty, the only fragment of
hope came from these four men...and when the life jackets were gone,
they
gave away their own.” As the survivors swam away, they
remember the
chaplains standing - their arms link - braced against the slanting deck.
The Light Eternal, based on the well-known hymn “God of Our
Fathers”,
is a reflective work that musically recounts this magnificent
story. You will hear: A Celebration of Life, The Sinking of
the
Ship, and Aftermath - Contemplation - Resolution before the final
statements of the hymn.
The Washington Post March
John Philip
Sousa
Edited by Frederick Fennell
This march was written in 1889 and first played by the Marine Band at
an award ceremony for an essay contest sponsored by the Washington Post
newspaper. To most listeners, the familiar strains are
recognized
as “patriotic” melodies. Sousa, however,
intended only to create
a commercially successful work that would be popular in the ballroom,
on
parade ground, and at the concert hall.
Soloists
Tonight we feature, for the first time,
representatives of the “community” component of the
Wind Symphony.
Kelly Jokisch is currently Director of Bands at South Florence High
School, Florence, South Carolina. Mrs. Jokisch holds a
bachelor
of music education from Stetson University, Deland Florida; a masters
in trumpet performance from the University of Florida and a performance
certificate from Göteborg University School of Music,
Göteborg,
Sweden. At the University of Florida Mrs. Jokisch served as a
graduate
assistant for the Gator Marching Band, Basketball Pep Band and the UF
Trumpet Studio.
Henry Isgett is a former FMU student and graduate of the South Carolina
Governor’s School of the Arts. He is employed by
ACS Technologies
as a network administrator. He has performed with many high
school and college ensembles throughout South Carolina and remains
active performing locally in a variety of settings including the
Florence Area Big Band.
FMU Wind Symphony
Last spring the Wind Symphony moved to a
Tuesday
evening rehearsal time and we opened the group to community
participation. This is the fourth concert we have performed
in
our new format. As you can see from the personnel roster, the
membership is evenly divided between FMU students and community
participants. We are satisfied with the result of this change
and
are seeking additional participants. If you play a band
instrument or know someone looking for a place to play, please contact
us. Information can be found at
web.fmarion.edu/finearts/windband.htm
and Mr. Alberty can be reached at 661-1540 or
calberty@fmarion.edu.
