program

Overture To A New Era . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Caesar Giovannini

A paraphrase of the composer's program notes: "The Overture To A New Era speaks forthrightly with the determination of incessant motion. The majestic call of the opening is followed by an energetic introductory section, which leads to the statement of two expressive themes. The opening call is restated in a heroic style. An all-encompassing finale and coda close the piece."

The Earle of Oxford's Marche. . . . . . . . . . . . . . Gordon Jacob

This is the first movement of the William Byrd Suite, a set of six pieces that were freely transcribed from a book of keyboard music by Renaissance composer William Byrd.  The characteristic Renaissance harmonies and style provide unique performance challenges, and the lightness of the work offers a refreshing contrast to the intensity of many contemporary band works.

Esprit de Corps . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Robert Jager

Esprit de Corps was commissioned by the United States Marine Band.  It is based on The Marine's Hymn and is a kind of fantasy-march, as well as a tribute to the Marine Band.  It contains both solemn and light moments and serves as a display piece for any fine group of band musicians.

Yorkshire Ballad. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . James Barnes

Slow, lyrical, and brimming with emotion, Yorkshire Ballad is an original composition written in the style of a folksong.  It was inspired by the composer's visit to the Yorkshire Dales of Northern England.

Cole Porter On Broadway . . . . . . . . . .arranged by Warren Barker

This fine arrangement by South Carolina resident Warren Barker presents nine of Cole Porter's most popular melodies in a variety of musical styles and rhythms.

Dance of the Tumblers . . . . . . . . . . . .Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov
Arranged by Andrew Balent

Arranged by yet another South Carolina resident, this rollicking and sprightly comedy piece is from the third act of Rimsky-Korsakov's opera Snow Maiden.  In addition to his important work as a composer, Rimsky-Korsakov had a naval career that spanned 28 years.  He was a celebrated teacher of many of Russia's most gifted composers, including Igor Stravinsky.

Appalachian Legacy. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Robert Sheldon

Appalachian Legacy was commissioned in remembrance of North Carolina musicteacher Katheryn Siphers.  It is based on the hymn tune When I Survey theWondrous Cross and explores the harmonic and rhythmic potential of the concertband.

Colorburst. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . George Kenny

In the form of the traditional military march, Colorburst finds its unique voice through chromaticism and rhythmic vitality.

FMU Wind Symphony

Tonight's concert marks the establishment of a "new" performance ensemble at FMU.  At the beginning of the spring semester, we moved to a Tuesday evening rehearsal time and opened the group to community participation.  As you can see from the personnel roster, the membership is evenly divided between FMU students and community participants.

The expanded instrumentation has opened new possibilities for us in the selection of literature.  Our students have benefited from rehearsing with some of the finest players in the region and many adult musicians now have a place to play regularly.  We are pleased with the success of this new endeavor and hope you enjoy the results of our experiment!
