Lawrence
Anderson came to Francis
Marion University in 2000 to serve as Chair of the Department of Fine
Arts and Professor of Visual Arts. His duties include
coordination of the Department's majors in Art Education, Music
Industry, Theatre Arts, and Visual Arts; chairing the FMU Artist Series
Committee; teaching in the Visual Arts program; and serving as Curator
for the Hyman Fine Arts Center Gallery. Professor Anderson was born in Canby, Minnesota in 1949. He studied at the University of South Dakota, from which he earned his B. F. A. in 1973. Mr. Anderson began graduate studies at the University of Nebraska and received his MFA from the University of Kentucky in 1981. He was an Artist-In-The-Schools resident for the National Endowment for the Arts and the Kentucky Arts Commission from 1977-80. From 1987 through 2000 he taught at the University of South Dakota and served as Chair of the Department of Art. He has also been a professor at the University of Louisville, University of Kentucky, and the University of Wisconsin Center, Marsfield. His work has been included in over 100 exhibits, 30 invitational print portfolios, and more than 30 public and private collections. “My work is
an activity of
investigation. It is about the way objects/surfaces engage or
break up the environment. I am interested in illusion of
material
configuration and how it leads
me to learn something new. I strive more to understand than
to be
understood.”
