My grandfather used to say, "You are not truly dead until the
last
person who knew you dies."
For over 250 years, generations of my family have lived in the Pee Dee
within 35 miles of Florence. For decades, their stories and memories
have been passed down in boxes of old letters, of photographs, on
tombstones, and in mementos. This is their legacy: what remains of
them. And of hundreds of other families from this region.
"Pee Dee Eulogies" is my attempt to celebrate the lives of some actual
residents by re-creating their memories in these virtual vignettes. You
will come to see and know these, the departed: to meet them through the
stories which made up their lives.
In other images, I did not know the stories. These works started with
some item I found or photograph I took while traveling around the Pee
Dee. I believe there are "memories in things," and with these
incredible artifacts, I created visual plots for what I imagined their
lives could have been. In them, we may see ourselves, the way we have
lived our lives.
And you will carry these images into the future: their lives and
memories, actual or imagined, will be alive and honored in you.
