Gourley, a native of Sweetwater, Tennessee, has been a member of the FMU faculty since 1985.  He has directed over 25 theatre productions at FMU and has been a judge, consultant or adjudicator for numerous theatre performances and pageants throughout the state.  From 1985 to 1999 he held a number of positions with the "Unto These Hills" outdoor drama at Cherokee, North Carolina.  He also has been involved in Ocunluftee Little Symphony, Glassboro Summer Theatre, Florence Little Theatre, Encore Theatre Co., Lake City Community Theatre, Manning Back Porch Players, Hartsville Community Theatre and many public school projects.

In April of 2004 Mr. Gourley was cited by Francis Marion University for his outstanding individual service to the University, the community and the state. In April of 2007 he received the E. Lorin Mason Distinguished Professor Award.
