Appalachian Legacy, by Robert Sheldon

Appalachian Legacy was commissioned in remembrance of North Carolina music teacher Katheryn Siphers. It is based on the hymn tune "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross" and explores the harmonic and rhythmic potential of the concert band.

Yorkshire Ballad is an original composition written in the style of a folksong and was inspired by composer's visit to the Yorkshire Dales of Northern England. It imitates the techniques of composer Percy Grainger, who wrote many settings of Australian and British folk music.

Karl L. King, as a young man, literally did run away to join the circus! There he became a virtuoso baritone player and had his first compositions published at the age of 17. He went on to become a circus bandmaster and important figure in the evolution of American bands.

This "spoof" on classical music compresses everyone's favorite themes into a performance lasting slightly over three minutes. As you count the melodies, remember that there are places where two themes are presented simultaneously!

This programmatic work depicts the time of the Mazamas, a hardy Indian tribe living in the rugged mountains of the Pacific Northwest. They occupied Mt. Mazama but vanished when that volcanic mountain erupted to form what is now known as Crater Lake. The composition includes unique compositional devices including chanting by band members. The chant translates roughly to "Land of the Mountains and Sea".
