MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY OPTION

Coordinators: Dr. Greg S. Pryor & Dr. Lori S. Turner

     Medical technologists usually serve as technical assistants to pathologists, performing clinical laboratory procedures helpful to physicians in the determination of the nature, course and treatment of disease. A Bachelor of Science degree in biology with emphasis in medical technology at FMU is awarded after successful completion of 124 hours of classroom and laboratory work.

     A cooperative program with McLeod Regional Medical Center allows students to become medical technologists in four years. Students will complete their clinical studies during the senior year (3 + 1 program). Application to this program must be made during the junior year and acceptance is on a competitive basis and not guaranteed.

     Students may also elect to obtain a B.S. in Biology, with the appropriate prerequisites, and then apply to a medical technology program for their clinical year of study (4 + 1 program). This option would require 5 years of study.

     Students will be admitted to final year only if:

  1. BulletThey have completed 3 academic years (or the equivalent) of undergraduate study including all General Education requirements;

  2. BulletThey have a minimum GPA of 2.6 in they biology, chemisty, physics, and mathematics courses.

  3. BulletThey have minimum overall GPA of 2.5.

     The Medical Technology (3+1 option) curriculum with a biology major and a chemistry minor is summarized below. Information on this page is subject to change, for the best information check your catalog.

     A student can complete the requirements for the degree to become a medical technologist in four years. The student is then eligible and must take the National Certification Exam from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
