PRE-HEALTH PROGRAM
Coordinator: Dr. Vernon W. Bauer
The Pre-Health Program tailors the standard biology major to meet the needs of students planning to pursue careers in medicine, dentistry, physical therapy, and other allied health professions. Note that this does not include students applying to nursing school. Students wishing to apply to nursing school will need to complete the pre-nursing requirements.
Students interested in going on to professional schools will complete the same curriculum as a biology major earning a bachelor of science degree. The only difference will be a little less flexibility in the choices of elective courses. Ideally, students in this program need to identify the professional schools they will be applying to by the end of their sophomore year. Each professional school has its own course requirements and students need to be aware of these as they register for upper-level courses.
Former students who have gone on to successfully attend professional school have written back to suggest that pre-health students take as many of the following courses as they can in preparation for their future courses. These courses include: Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Immunology, Genetics, Developmental Biology, Cell Biology, Organic Chemistry I, Organic Chemistry II, and Biochemistry. Additional courses that are often required by professional schools, though not required by the biology major, are courses in statistics and psychology.
